TABUK – Saher, the automated traffic control and management system used in the Kingdom’s major cities, has uncovered the prevalent and troubling practice of government employees illegally using official cars for personal purposes and incurring dozens of traffic violations along the way, Okaz newspaper quoted an official source at the General Directorate of Traffic as saying.
According to the official, Saher found that 80 percent of government cars given to civil servants were involved in numerous traffic violations, all of which were reported to the respective government agency. He said the Traffic Department has received many letters of thanks from various government agencies for helping them to discover and crackdown on the practice.
Separately, Saher has also helped reduce the practice of using rental cars for joyriding. The official said after rental car companies were electronically linked to the Traffic Directorate, they were immediately notified if a customer accumulated a violation and this has helped companies blacklist customers who drive recklessly. — Okaz/SG
