Party with a difference
The BJP party nowadays is frequently in the news for all the wrong reasons. The conviction of former BJP president Bangaru Laxman is another blow for the BJP. Laxman was awarded four years imprisonment by a Delhi court 11 years after having been caught in a sting operation for taking a large bribe in a fictitious defense deal case. This is the first time a politician has been convicted and sentenced to a jail term in a corruption case for accepting a bribe in the Indian judicial system. This sentence should send a strong message to all politicians. Only tough laws and the rule of law can deter politicians and government officials from looting the country. True, the conviction came after many years, but it still came. It is heartening to see the wheels of justice finally moving, at last. It may be a case of justice delayed, but it is not denied in our country. It will go a long way to restoring the confidence of the common man in the rule of law. Corrupt politicians are traitors who have sold our motherland. I salute the Indian judiciary for withstanding the legal and illegal pressure put upon them by influential political people. The judgment is proof of India’s credentials as a country that has committed itself to the rule of law. As a citizen of India, I am proud of our judiciary. The BJP cannot make much noise about the corruption issue now. Indeed, the corrupt image of the BJP is paving the way for the growth of regional parties.
